Drivetally keeps the supervised driving log that most states ask for before a teen's road test. The supervisor taps Start while parked, the drive counts on a large clock, and End is tapped once parked again. Hours, night hours and bad-weather hours add up against your state's rule.

It shows the date the road test becomes possible, from the permit holding period, the license age and the pace of recent drives, and prints a clean log with a signature for each supervisor to hand in, or the totals to copy onto your state's own form.

Why we built it

  • Logins that fail and drives that vanish after an update. There is no account and nothing to sign in to. Drives are saved on the phone the moment they start, with a last-good copy and one-file backups; a drive in progress survives the app being closed or the battery dying.
  • GPS that stops a drive at a red light or loses half of it. The start and end times are the record, never the GPS. Distance and a route sketch are optional extras, recorded only while a drive someone started is running.
  • Ads before a drive can start or be saved. No ad ever shows on the Drive tab, the drive screen or while saving a drive. Banners stay on the log and progress screens, and one purchase removes them.
  • One learner, one parent, and an export that crashes. Several learners and supervisors share one phone, drives can be sent to the other parent's phone without counting anything twice, and the PDF log has initials, certifications, a notary block and a state-form summary.

Features

Built for the way families practice

  • One big Start button, then a large clock with Pause and End. Nothing to read or tap while moving
  • The driver never touches the phone: the supervisor starts and ends drives, parked
  • Lock the phone or close the app: the drive keeps counting from its start time and is never lost
  • No auto-stop at a long red light, no drive cut short by GPS
  • Forgot to start the timer? Add a past drive in seconds, even one that crosses midnight
  • Pause for a stop that should not count

Your state's rule, all 50 states and dc

  • Total hours, night hours and, where required, bad-weather hours (Pennsylvania, South Dakota) or night-or-weather hours (Alaska)
  • The variants that change the rule: with or without driver education, the parent class, skills programs and more
  • Permit holding period, minimum ages, and the date the road test becomes possible
  • Each rule shows its source (the IIHS licensing laws table) and when it was checked

Night hours, worked out for you

  • Sunset and sunrise calculated for every drive, offline
  • Choose what counts: sunset to sunrise, dusk to dawn, or fixed clock hours
  • Type your own figure for any drive

A real log for every drive

  • Several learners and several supervisors on one phone, each drive with who supervised
  • Roads and weather: residential, city, highway, rural, rain, snow, fog, ice and more
  • A checklist of skills (merging, parallel parking, roundabouts, night driving...) and a practice plan that suggests what to work on next
  • Notes on every drive
  • Optional distance and a route sketch, only during a drive you started

Progress you can see

  • Rings for total, night and bad-weather hours
  • Week-by-week chart and your recent pace
  • A projected date for finishing the hours
  • Overlapping or very long drives flagged so the log stays clean

Print it, sign it, hand it in

  • Letter-size PDF log: every drive with date, times, night minutes, conditions, supervisor and a column for initials
  • A signed certification for each supervisor (draw a signature once, or sign the printout)
  • Optional notary block for states that want the log notarized
  • A summary page with every total your state's own form asks for
  • CSV export for spreadsheets

Family-friendly

Drivetally is not affiliated with any DMV or state licensing agency, and requirements change: check your state's rules before the road test.

  • Send a learner's drives to another phone: nothing is ever counted twice
  • One-file backup and restore
  • Practice reminders on the days you choose, and a reminder when the holding period ends
  • English and Spanish, light and dark themes
  • Every feature free. Small ads stay away from the drive screen; remove them with one purchase

How it works

Each state's rule comes from the IIHS graduated licensing laws table (learner stage), checked in November 2026: total supervised hours, night hours, bad-weather hours where a state counts them, the permit holding period and the minimum ages. Where a state's own page or form confirms a row, it is noted; North Dakota's figures come from secondary sources and are marked as such.

Night minutes are worked out for every drive from the sun: sunrise and sunset are computed offline with the NOAA solar equations for the place the drive started (its GPS position, the family's home area or the centre of the state), within about half a minute of published tables. Pauses are taken off before anything is counted.

The earliest road-test date is the later of the end of the holding period and the license age; when hours are still missing, the pace of the last four weeks of driving (or the whole log) gives a projected finish date for the total, night and bad-weather hours.

Honest limits

  • It keeps the family's own log; it does not submit anything to a state and is not an official form. Some states accept only their own form: the summary page lists what to copy onto it.
  • Laws change. Every rule shows when it was checked; confirm with your state's licensing office before the road test.
  • Phones must not distract the driver. The app is built so that the supervisor starts and ends drives while parked, and there is nothing to read or tap while moving.

Questions

How many supervised driving hours does my teen need?

It depends on the state: most ask for 40 to 60 hours with 10 at night, Maine asks for 70, Pennsylvania 65 (5 in bad weather), Texas 30, and Arkansas and Mississippi none. Drivetally shows your state's rule, including the variants for driver education.

What counts as night driving?

Most states say "at night" or "after sunset" without more. Drivetally counts from sunset to sunrise at the drive's place, worked out offline; you can switch to dusk-to-dawn or fixed hours, or type the night minutes for any drive.

Will I lose the drive if the app closes or the phone dies?

No. The start time is saved the moment the drive starts, so the drive keeps counting and is there when the app opens again. Everything is saved on the phone and can be backed up to one file.

Can both parents log drives on their own phones?

Yes. Each phone can send a learner's drives to the other as a file; opening it adds new drives and updates edited ones, and nothing is ever counted twice.

Does it need GPS or location?

No. Drives are timed by the clock. Distance and a route sketch are optional, and location is then used only while a drive you started is running, with a notification, never in the background.

Can I print the log for the DMV?

Yes. The PDF log lists every drive with its times, night minutes, conditions and supervisor, with an initials column, signed certifications, an optional notary block and a summary page of the totals your state's form asks for.

When can my teen take the road test?

After the permit holding period and at the license age, once the hours are done. Drivetally shows each date and the projected date the hours will be complete at the recent pace.

Is Drivetally an official state app?

No. It is an independent log by Fernhart Labs, not affiliated with any DMV or state agency, and it does not send anything anywhere.
