What it is

Features

Built for homesteaders, 4-H and FFA families, and small farms raising a few feeder pigs a year. Defaults are typical figures (35 to 118 kg, or 50 to 260 lb) and every value can be changed.

This is a purchasing estimate, not a feeding programme. For rations by growth stage, speak to your feed supplier or vet.

  • Plans feed by weight gained, the way pig producers do
  • Editable feed conversion ratio (3.0 average; 3.3 to 3.5 is common for backyard pigs)
  • Days to finish weight from your average daily gain
  • Feed per pig, total feed, bags and optional cost
  • Works in kilograms or pounds
  • 100% offline: no internet, no account, no data collected

How it works

Feed is planned by weight gained, the way pig producers do it: the gain per pig times the feed conversion ratio (the feed it takes to put on each kilogram or pound), times the number of pigs. The default ratio is 3.0; 3.3 to 3.5 is common for backyard pigs. Days come from your average daily gain.

Questions

How much feed does it take to raise a pig?

Multiply the weight to be gained by the feed conversion ratio. Taking a pig from 35 to 118 kg (83 kg of gain) at a ratio of 3.0 needs about 250 kg of feed.

What is a feed conversion ratio?

The amount of feed it takes to put on one unit of body weight. Around 3.0 is average for grower-finisher pigs; backyard pigs are often 3.3 to 3.5.
