State quarters list by year (1999–2008), with mint marks

Updated · Fernhart Labs

Short answer

The 50 State Quarters came out five a year from 1999 to 2008, starting with Delaware and ending with Hawaii, in the order the states ratified the Constitution or joined the Union. Each was struck for circulation at Philadelphia (P) and Denver (D), so a complete circulation set is 100 coins.

In 2009, six more quarters followed for the District of Columbia and five U.S. territories, bringing the program to 56 designs. San Francisco (S) struck the quarters as proof coins for collectors.

Mint marks on state quarters

  • P: Philadelphia. Since 1980, Philadelphia quarters carry a P.
  • D: Denver.
  • S: San Francisco, which has struck proof coins for collectors since 1968; S quarters were not made for circulation in this program.
  • No W. The first quarters with a West Point W mint mark came later, in 2019, in the America the Beautiful series.

What came next

From 2010 the quarter honored a national park or site in every state, DC and territory: the America the Beautiful quarters. They were followed by the Washington Crossing the Delaware reverse (2021), the American Women Quarters (2022–2025), the Semiquincentennial quarters (2026) and, from 2027, the Youth Sports quarters announced by the Mint on October 26, 2026.
