Rabbit gestation period and breeding calendar
Updated · Fernhart Labs
Short answer
A doe kindles about 31 days after breeding: Penn State Extension gives an average gestation of 31 to 32 days. Palpate for kits between days 10 and 14, put the nest box in on day 28, and check her if she hasn't kindled by day 32.
After kindling, take the nest box out 5 to 21 days later and wean at about 30 days for meat litters, or around 6 weeks for show and pet litters.
The breeding calendar, day by day
Count the breeding date as day 0. The example column shows the dates for a doe bred on March 1.
| When | What to do | Example: bred Mar 1 |
|---|---|---|
| Day 0 | Breeding (the doe goes to the buck) | Mar 1 |
| Day 12 | Palpate to check for kits (reliable from about day 10; gentler after day 14) | Mar 13 |
| Day 17 | If she palpated empty and starts pulling fur now, it is likely a false pregnancy: rebreed | Mar 18 |
| Day 28 | Nest box in (earlier boxes get soiled) | Mar 29 |
| Day 31 | Kindling due (31–32 days on average) | Apr 1 |
| Day 32 | Not kindled yet: check her and the box | Apr 2 |
| Day 34 | Still not kindled: call your vet | Apr 4 |
| Kindling + 21 | Nest box out (5–21 days after kindling; later in cold weather) | Apr 22 |
| Kindling + 42 | Wean (6 weeks for show and pet litters; meat litters about 4 weeks) | May 13 |
These are Hutchwise's default steps, each one a setting you can change. The day 34 vet prompt is a cautious default, not a published threshold: if a doe is overdue or seems unwell, ask your vet.
How long are rabbits pregnant?
The average is 31 to 32 days (Penn State Extension). A few days either side still happens, which is why the nest box goes in on day 28 rather than the day before she is due, and why a doe that has not kindled on day 31 is worth watching rather than worrying about straight away.
Palpation: checking for kits
Feeling the doe's belly for the embryos is the only reliable way to confirm pregnancy, according to the FAO. Do it between 10 and 14 days after mating: before day 9 it does not work, and after day 14 it is more delicate and rough handling risks an abortion. If she is empty, put her back to the buck as soon as possible.
Putting the doe back with the buck to see whether she refuses him is not a pregnancy test: many pregnant does accept mating and some empty does refuse.
Nest box, kindling and the first days
- Day 28: nest box in, with bedding. Put in earlier, it tends to get soiled.
- Kindling: check the box the morning after. Penn State advises looking at and counting the kits 48 hours after birth and removing any dead ones.
- Nest box out: 5 to 21 days after kindling; later in cold weather, when the kits still need the warmth.
- Litter size: the average commercial litter is 8 to 10 kits (Penn State).
Weaning and breeding back
Commercial meat rabbitries wean at about 30 days, and Penn State puts the average at about five litters a doe a year. Show and pet breeders often wait until about 6 weeks. How soon to rebreed depends on the system: from a couple of days after kindling in intensive production to one or two months in extensive systems (FAO). Hutchwise rebreeds after weaning by default, with earlier options.
Questions
How long is a rabbit pregnant?
31 to 32 days on average. Count the breeding date as day 0; kindling is due around day 31.
When should I put the nest box in?
On day 28 after breeding. Put in much earlier, the doe tends to soil it.
When can you palpate a rabbit for pregnancy?
Between 10 and 14 days after mating. Before day 9 the kits can't be felt; after day 14 palpation is more delicate and risks an abortion.
What is a false pregnancy in rabbits?
A doe that is not pregnant but behaves as if she were, often pulling fur and building a nest around 16 to 18 days after mating. If she palpated empty, rebreed her.
How many litters can a rabbit have a year?
In commercial meat production, with weaning at about 30 days, about five litters a doe a year (Penn State). Hobby and show breeders usually breed less often.
When do baby rabbits leave the nest box?
The box is usually taken out 5 to 21 days after kindling, later in cold weather. Kits are weaned at about 30 days in meat herds or around 6 weeks for show and pet litters.
Hutchwise: Rabbit Breeding
Rabbit breeding records with kindling reminders, litters and pedigrees.
Hutchwise turns each breeding into this calendar automatically: palpation, nest box, kindling due, overdue checks, nest box out, weaning and breeding back, with reminders on the right days. It keeps every doe's and buck's records, pedigrees and litter results, flags inbreeding before you pair, and works offline.
